Biomimetic Dentistry

A Philosophy I’m Working Toward

Biomimetic dentistry is an approach to restorative care that aims to preserve natural tooth structure and rebuild teeth in a way that closely mimics real enamel and dentin. Instead of relying on aggressive drilling or full-coverage crowns whenever a tooth is weakened, biomimetic techniques use advanced adhesives, minimally invasive preparation, and tooth-like materials to strengthen what remains and restore only what is necessary.

At this stage of my career, I am actively training in biomimetic methods and integrating more of this philosophy into my work over time. My long-term goal is to offer a fully biomimetic-focused practice in Vancouver Island, but for now, my priority is to continue learning, refining my skills, and applying these principles wherever appropriate in my current practice.

If you’re curious about the biomimetic approach, I’m always happy to talk through what it means and when it may be beneficial. My commitment — now and in the future — is to conservative, patient-centred dentistry that respects the natural tooth.

Your tooth is an organ

...specifically an ectodermal organ.

It has layers and different tissue types, each with its own role and function. Your tooth deserves care that respects this natural design.

When the tooth is damaged...

Traditional dentistry teaches us to shape the tooth to fit the filling (GV Black principles). At times, most of the outer part of the tooth is sacrificed to make the material stay! But what if we could do better?

What if we could mimic nature instead?

Mother Nature perfected the tooth long before modern materials existed. Biomimetic dentistry works with your tooth, not against it.

Preserve every bit of your tooth.

Instead of carving the tooth to fit a filling, biomimetic dentistry shapes the restoration to fit what remains of your natural tooth.

Biomimetic dentistry restores strength and function by rebuilding in layers—just like your natural tooth. We protect what matters most.

The future of dentistry is biomimetic.

Strong, beautiful, and natural—your tooth deserves a restoration that feels and functions like the real thing. That’s the biomimetic difference.
